The End of Empty "Eco" Claims and the Big Inkjet Printing Merger – Weekly Roundup
The last week of September 2026 brought the advertising, printing, and packaging industry two pieces of news that will stick in our memory for a while. On one hand, the European Union is tightening the rules around environmental communication; on the other, a new global player is emerging in the inkjet printing market. Here's a look at what both developments mean for companies in our sector.
01 · Law and Labeling
No More Empty "Eco" Claims – the EmpCo Directive Is Now in Force [1]
On September 27, 2026, the provisions of the EmpCo Directive came into force across the entire European Union, putting order into how environmental claims can be made in marketing. From now on, it's no longer enough to print "eco," "green," or "biodegradable" on a package – such vague, unsubstantiated claims are simply banned. Importantly, the regulation doesn't just apply to labels. It also covers advertising, product names, and all marketing materials – in effect, the entire chain of communication with customers.
For companies designing packaging, printing labels, or preparing campaigns built around "pro-environmental" messaging, this is a signal to review their portfolio of slogans and claims as soon as possible. In Poland, matters are further complicated by the fact that the national law implementing the directive is still awaiting the president's signature. In practice, this creates uncertainty about how – and by whom – the rules will be enforced right after the EU deadline, which is exactly the worst moment to take risks with new campaigns or packaging lines.
While marketing departments and lawyers are figuring out how to safely rephrase packaging slogans, something equally significant is happening in a completely different segment of the industry – printing technology production.
02 · Mergers and Acquisitions
Agfa and EFI Join Forces – a New Inkjet Printing Giant Is Born [2]
On September 28, 2026, Agfa-Gevaert and Electronics For Imaging (EFI) announced an agreement under which Agfa's Digital Printing Solutions segment will be merged with EFI into a single entity. The ownership split is clear: EFI will hold 60%, while Agfa retains 40%. The new company is expected to generate around €540 million in annual revenue and offer a complete range of industrial inkjet printing solutions – from labels and packaging to wide-format and textile printing.
It's essentially a response to a market that has long wanted a single supplier covering the full range of applications, instead of patching together a system from several different equipment brands. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, provided the necessary regulatory approvals are obtained – and given the scale of the merger, this could turn out to be one of the biggest consolidations in digital printing in years. For print shops, packaging manufacturers, and wide-format businesses, this potentially opens up new technological possibilities, though it's also worth watching how the merger affects equipment availability, service, and pricing in the coming months.
